Nine years ago, I remember relaxing on the couch in my house as I began to watch the 2006 NFL Draft. The relaxation soon turned to exhaustion as I watched the first three rounds of the draft drag by without hearing my name called. As the fourth round began, so did the ticker. The ticker continued to come around over and over again and yet my name was still nowhere to be seen. At this point the frustration started to kick in and I couldn’t bear to stare at the ticker any longer.
I retired to my bedroom to catch some rest as the fourth round drew to a close. Yet it was only a short time later when my mom called me to let me know that I had been drafted as the 2nd pick in the 5th round. As the 135th overall pick, the Saints put an end to the waiting game and my new home would now be in New Orleans.
I couldn’t help but be a little disappointed as I saw names called before mine. I now had a chip on my shoulder and knew that it was time to set out and prove to everyone what I was capable of.
It’s funny I was talking to my agent, Craig Domann of 360 Sports LLC, who reminded me of some of the guys who were drafted ahead of me that year. Not everyone on that list can say they are a six-year starter, defensive captain and Super Bowl Champion!
Even though I felt that I deserved a higher draft pick, I was still grateful that I now belonged to a NFL team. Looking back on the bigger picture now, I find extreme joy in knowing that it was all part of God’s plan. If I had not been drafted to New Orleans, then I would not have met my lovely wife. Now I am happily married, have a beautiful daughter and earned a Super Bowl Ring! Needless to say, the Job’s Done … for now. Bigger and better things are to come!
